Good as Gold

Colorado State Capitol Dome

Denver, CO

Perhaps the most iconic building in Colorado, the State Capitol was constructed over a ten year period spanning the turn of the 20th century. After standing proudly for more than 100 years the State of Colorado embarked on an aggressive rehabilitation of the entire dome structure in 2011 based on severe structural deterioration.

Humphries Poli Architects is part of a national team of experts assembled to repair the fragile cast iron structure and exterior skin of the dome. Our role in this project was to assess, design, and specify the rehabilitation of all wood and steel windows in the dome. This included field investigations and preparation of construction documents. HPA also provided continual on-site assistance throughout construction and maintained a local presence for the team.

The restoration of the Capitol Dome is a high profile, multi-phase, and complex historic preservation project requiring strict attention to detail and adherence to local and national preservation standards. The unique needs of each component of the dome project were addressed in a manner that will ensure performance over the next 100 years.
